GENERAL INFORMATION

  • WHAT IS POMELO PRESS?

Pomelo Press is a West Seattle based atelier, a small boutique studio dedicated to injecting a healthy dose of handmade, artisanal flavor into digital production. We specialize in greeting cards and giclée art prints…all lovingly printed one at a time in the studio. We also create, in the same charming and painterly style, custom portraits of the people you love the most. It goes without saying these are the two and the four-legged variety.

The Pomelo Press aesthetic is very painterly, very hip, very charming.

  • WHAT WE OFFER

Pomelo Press designs and creates a variety of art objects, ranging from greeting cards, giclée prints and custom portraits to books, which come in both real (ooh…paper!) and digital varieties.

Speaking of paper, Pomelo Press uses nothing but the best. The cards are printed on Museo Crane paper: 100% cotton, archival, acid-free, velina finish, 220 gsm. It is an exquisite surface. The larger pieces are printed on Epson Fine Art Paper, which has an elegant, textured, fine-artsy quality most closely resembling watercolor paper. It too is archival, acid and lignin-free, 100% cotton fiber, delivering beautiful tonal transitions and a wide color gamut. At 340 gsm, it has a definite presence.

Whatever the size of the work, the imagery is lovely and sophisticated, with a sensuous, charming, handmade aesthetic. Even the smaller greeting cards may be considered little paintings, and therefore suitable for framing, and hanging on the wall.

  • HANDMADE DIGITAL PRINTS

Handmade digital prints. What a concept, you might say. The truth is although that may indeed sound like a complete oxymoron, each piece of artwork is individually printed one at a time in the studio, rather than mass produced at a large commercial facility.

So you see? Handmade digital prints.

  • COLOR ACCURACY

Will the artwork look exactly as it does online? To a great degree, yes, but there are two factors that must come into consideration:

One: Computers are color calibrated differently, and what we see on our screen may vary slightly from what you see on yours. Also, in our experience, there is a decided variation in color reproduction among the different browsers. We are Mac people. On that platform, Safari and Firefox seem about right. Chrome comes across as way more saturated than the originals.

Two: Computer screens are lit from behind. Paper is flat. Images will seem brighter onscreen.

  • SHIPPING

Shipping is free within the continental United States.

Because of the POD aspect of our production process, each order is individually and custom printed. In a busy season, please allow approximately a week for your order to ship, and then, depending on where you are located, up to a week for it to be delivered.

  • COPYRIGHT

All rights are reserved, quite naturally, for us. Of course.

  • CARITAS

Pomelo Press especially welcomes interest from animal welfare and children’s organizations. Because of the “print on demand” aspect of our process, we can tailor both our greeting card and our giclée prints with a promotional message unique to your organization.

In fact, we are so kindly disposed to your mission that we would consider a joint promotional effort where part of the proceeds go to an organization that supports small, absolutely marvelous, two and four-legged people.

    Make us an offer.

  • NEWSLETTER

If you would like to subscribe to our newsletter, it's a cinch.

Our Contact page has all the gory details. Or you may click the Contact button on any of our greeting card pages. For instance, this one. Or this one. Or any of them.

  • WARRANTY
    Stacks Image 486

For all products, Pomelo Press will honor any damage or deterioration of the artwork that is not a result of client negligence. In that case, we will completely replace the problematic piece. HOWEVER, DO NOT HANG OR PLACE YOUR ARTWORK IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT. Doing so will cause the inks to fade prematurely, and will void the warranty. And of course, be gentle. But you already knew that, right?

GREETING CARDS | GICLÉE PRINTS

  • YOU PLAY ART DIRECTOR

Due to the extremely labor intensive and personalized aspect of our production process, Pomelo Press is based on a POD (print on demand) formula.

For the client, this is very good news, as it allows for a certain amount of customization in regards to the greeting card line. In effect, you play Art Director.

What this means is that if you like a particular design, but would prefer a different message (for instance “Season’s Greetings” instead of “Winter Love”, or “Happy Birthday” instead of “Thank You”), a message that is personalized (Hey Joe, what’s up?”, or absolutely no message at all, that is all eminently do-able. And at no extra charge.

If you would like to cherry pick the choice of cards, which, for any given theme,  are offered in a pack of six, each a different color variation, that is another option. For instance, if you preferred three blues and three pinks, instead of the entire color gamut, that is absolutely no problem.

Please call or email with individual and specific requests.

  • LAYOUT

In all cases pertaining to our giclée prints, we have indicated the paper size as well as the image size. Each print, regardless of proportion, will have a minimum of .5 inch margin. This protects the image from damage and allows for easier framing and mounting.

CUSTOM PORTRAITS

  • THE PROCESS

Pomelo Press creates luminous, painterly imagery of the people that you adore. They are extraordinary portraits.....exquisite celebrations of life and love.

The Pomelo commission is custom and individually created. The source of the work is photographic, an image that you either e-mail, snail mail, or give to us personally. In the absence of original material, in certain circumstances, arrangements can be made for an on-location shoot.

The original image is then transformed digitally into a painterly work of art. There is no formula....no recipe.....each work is unique.

Because the artist’s tool is a computer, and not a paintbrush, there is sometimes a misconception that the computer does all the work.....that a very clever operator can push a few very clever buttons, and out pops a painting. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is a tremendous amount of work, and talent, that goes into the creation of each image.

  • VARIATIONS ON A THEME

Happily, unlike more conventional media, computer technology affords the choice of output to a variety of substrates, in various sizes, depending on the taste and the needs of the client. So far, at Pomelo Press, these have included canvas, fine art paper, and translucent film. An artwork commissioned by a client to hang on the wall might also be printed on a T-shirt, or a greeting card. Or printed in a limited edition to give to friends and family.

Additionally, the computer allows an almost infinite capability to vary the tonality and coloration of an image. A little bluer, a little redder, a little lighter, a little darker? No problem. You can save them all, and then choose. Or you can print them all, if you really want to go to town.

  • THE VIRTUES OF DIGITAL

The actual size of an image is critical to its pricing, but not as critical with regards to digital production as versus more conventional painting. The hard work is creating the image itself.

Once that is done, there is infinite potential to print multiples of that image very modestly.

Let’s say, for instance: new baby, two sets of grandparents, and the choice of a 13 X 19 painting as the perfect gift and commemoration. Well, the first product will cost you $1000 for the image and the print. The second painting will cost you....$200. You’ve already paid for the image. That is a total of $1200 for two paintings, with both sets of grandparents thrilled to the max.

Or a portrait of the bride and groom taken from the wedding photographs. First 13 X 19 image is $1250. After that it is only $200 for each additional image. At that price, every member of the family can have a print of the lovely couple.

What a deal, if we say so ourselves.

  • PRICING

The price of a custom portrait is dependent on several factors: the size of the image, the complexity, the number of subjects, the substrate. There are three sizes that are printed in-house:

    8.5 X 11 inches
    13 X 19 inches
    17 X 22 inches

Larger images are definitely possible, to pretty much any dimensions that you would like. These pieces are printed at a high-end photo lab.

The base price for custom artwork is $850.

  • IMAGE UPLOAD

While we are able to create beautiful portraits from almost any size image, the bigger the file is the better, as there is much more information and detail in a larger file to work with.

We accept files in the following formats: jpg, jpeg, png, dng and psd. If you have a file sharing account such as Dropbox or the like, simply send us the link. Otherwise, we are very pleased with the simplicity and ease of use at wetransfer.

Please call or write if you have any questions: 206.535.6999

  • HAPPINESS IS ESSENTIAL

For custom work: your satisfaction is completely guaranteed. Interim proofs and possibilities will be submitted for your approval all during the progress of the portrait. If, within a week of receipt, you do not totally love the artwork, you do not have to keep it. Let us know, and then send it back, undamaged. Your investment will be returned in full minus an extremely modest 20% of the invoice, as well as any shipping costs, if applicable.

For all Pomelo Press products: we will honor any damage or deterioration of the artwork that is not a result of client negligence. We will replace any problematic art print. HOWEVER, DO NOT HANG OR PLACE YOUR ARTWORK IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT. Doing so will cause the inks to fade prematurely, and will void this warranty.

And of course, be gentle. But you already knew that, right?
